Evidence-Based Dry Needling to Ease Tension, Improve Mobility, and Accelerate Recovery — Move Freely Again on Sydney’s Lower North Shore

What is dry needling?

Dry needling is a skilled technique in which a thin, sterile filament needle is inserted into tight muscle bands or myofascial trigger points to reduce pain, release tightness and restore muscle function. It is different from acupuncture in its assessment, goals and the clinical reasoning used (we target specific muscular trigger points and dysfunctions). In our clinic dry needling is always delivered by qualified clinicians as part of a broader rehabilitation plan and as a tool to accelerate recovery and improve outcomes when combined with progressive exercise and movement retraining.

Who can benefit? (we commonly treat)

  • Neck tension and chronic neck pain — headaches, tight upper trapezius, limited neck movement.
  • Lower back pain — persistent achy or tight low back, sacroiliac region pain and pain related to gluteal/hip muscle trigger points.
  • Shoulder pain and stiffness — rotator cuff-related tightness, scapular muscle trigger points and movement dysfunction.
  • Tennis and Golfer’s elbow
  • Hip / Knee pain and gluteal dysfunction — piriformis or gluteal trigger points, reduced hip ROM and pain with loading.
  • Athletes & weekend warriors — to reduce local muscle tightness, improve movement quality and reduce pain interfering with training.

What are the benefits people typically notice?

  • Rapid reduction in local muscle tightness and tender spots — many patients feel immediate reduction in “knots” and local stiffness.
  • Reduction of pain and discomfort
  • Improved range of motion and easier loading of muscles — releasing trigger points frequently makes exercises and strengthening feel more effective and comfortable.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different. Some people notice big changes after one visit, especially for acute tightness and trigger-point tenderness. For chronic problems or pain that’s been present a long time, a course of care (usually a series of sessions across 2–8 weeks) combined with progressive exercise often gives the most durable results. We’ll assess your pain, movement, goals and design a personalised plan.

What to expect during a session

  • Short clinical assessment and history (what makes pain better/worse, previous treatments, goals)
  • Palpation to find tight bands/trigger points
  • Dry needling (very thin sterile needles) inserted into targeted muscle(s) — some patients feel a twitch or cramp-like sensation; others barely feel it
  • Follow-up active exercises and movement retraining to reinforce the changes and prevent recurrence
  • Advice on home exercises, load progression and self-management
